Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray in the morning on Sep. 4th, 2006.
It was the most horrible news in 2006.
I've been watching his shows ever since I was in senior high. The episodes always brought joy and laughter to my family. Although I have never met him, he was just like a friend. He was always funny with an uplifting spirit, yet never forgot to educate his audience all the knowledge about the snakes, crocs and other animals. I always loved it when he held one of his crocs in his chest, kissed it then said “what a beauty!” This moment appeared funny because, I had to think and ask myself what’s so beautiful about a croc that has a mouthful of pointed teeth.
I remember once I went to his Australia Zoo’s homepage and left a message at the guestbook. It wasn’t very easy for me at the time trying to read all that English and finally found the right place to leave a message. And it wasn’t easy either, to try to write something down. I think I wrote something like… please do come to Taiwan someday and you will love the wildlife here. But I know he never came....
Now, although my passion to this Crocodile Hunter has faded, I’ve never forgot him and his joyous shows. Whenever I flipped through the channels and came across his shows, I would stop and watch and let all the fun memories came back to me.
Steve’s passion towards those animals especially the unlovable and ugly ones (well for me they still are) was something I really admired. For me, he is the greatest environmentalist in the world, even better then Jeff Corwin (although I like his shows, too).
I can’t understand why God chose this way to end his life. There was an anger inside me, because in a way, compare to those dangerous crocs and snakes, he was like being killed by a rabbit…so ironic, unbelievable and yet so tragic. A great crocodile hunter was killed not by the crocs, snakes but…by a fish?! And that he was only 44, had a lovely wife and two cute young children! How could such a thing ever happen?
I wish I could go to his zoo and put flowers and a card there. Someday.. I guess.. I’ll still visit his zoo. After all, the sprit of this legendary man from Oz will never die.
Oh.. and I love these posts from Animal Planet Fansite:
Heaven has a new Zookeeper
I can picture this beloved man darting past the angels, running up to God and saying, "Crikey! Give me something to do, Mate!" And God chuckles and says, "I've already planned it, son. Turn around." The animals he's known and loved who have passed before him are lined up like an army. His mum is there, too. Steve rushes to hug her. After the embrace, she laughs and points to a sign: Welcome to Nirvana Zoo. Home of the Crocodile Hunter.Thank you, Steve. You have given me a greater appreciation of this world. --4dogspal
Can't you just see him looking at the dinosaurs and being like Crikey! These might be a little hard to catch. Nirvana Zoo Home of the Crocodile Hunter. That is awesome. Miss you Steve.
